Clean Water Comes to the Village!

UPDATE ON APRIL 7, 2024

We are so excited to share pictures of the children at NASA Nursery School as they received the first drops of clean water which was made possible by your kindness and generosity to our WATER WATER EVERYWHERE campaign.

As many of you know, and have seen firsthand, the clean water that we take so for granted is truly a gift of life to the 700+ Maasai people living in the Makao Mapya Village in Tanzania where we helped to build the school.  When we visited last May, the elders asked us to help bring clean water to them.  We were sickened to see not only the filthy water children were drinking, but also the danger they faced in sharing the puddles with wild animals.  Just a few months ago, a child from the village died as he had to take his animals a long distance to a river for water and he drowned trying to bring them home. He would be alive today if water had been available to him in the village.  Clean water will also allow the Maasai people to grow their crops without worry of drought, which often plagues their efforts.  During our visit we witnessed firsthand the withered crops.

While water is something we have taken for granted, please know that you have provided someone halfway around the world a gift that is truly life changing.  These children and their families will no longer have to worry about diseases like typhoid and cholera.  Out of the 65 million people living in Tanzania, 49 million are without clean water.  Thanks to your kindness, that number just dropped to $48,999,300.  It may seem to many that our project has had such little impact, but for the people in this village, it has made all the difference in the world.  We thank the Kevin E. Myers Family Foundation for matching your donations. Thank you for helping us make that difference.  Asante Sana (Thank you)

UPDATE ON JANUARY 14, 2024

The people living in the Makao Mapya Village in Tanzania have been celebrating since we gave them the news that because of your support, they will soon have clean water.

On Friday, January 12th, they started hand digging the trench to connect their village to the government owned water tank approximately 8 miles away. Each villager has a section to dig. They have made incredible progress and hope to have the trench completed later this week.

The pipes and other supplies have arrived and as soon as the trench is complete, Great Wall Construction Company will begin the process of bringing the water to the village. Things move quickly in Tanzania and they hope that clean water will soon be flowing.

Once the pumps have been installed, crews will begin construction on Sara's Kitchen at NASA Nursery School. A fence will be constructed to protect the school, kitchen, playground, garden and water from wild animals. Once the kitchen is operational, Wyatt's Garden will be planted to provide fresh vegetables to the children at the school. Hayden's Playground is nearing completion.

Scott's cousin, Jamie, her husband Brian and children Brooke and Gavin have funded a food program for the school that will provide a delivery of maize and beans each month. This ensures that all of the children will receive a healthy meal each day - the only meal most of them will have.

We continue to be blessed with kindness and cannot wait to share photos with you of the completed project.

“WHEN THE WELL IS DRY, WE KNOW THE WORTH OF WATER” Benjamin Franklin

Water scarcity in the Makao Mapya Village in Tanzania is a pressing issue that affects every aspect of the Maasai community’s daily life. Women and children spend hours each day walking long distances to fetch water from potholes on the roads or trenches also used by cattle and wild animals, exacerbating the health and safety risks faced by the community.

In 2019, Scott’s Legacy learned of the Maasai people and the village’s one room mud hut without a teacher or clean water by Kundael Molla, our partner in Tanzania. Kundael had already secured the help of his safari clients, Nadia and Sami, to provide funds to construct a new school building. He asked Scott’s Legacy to provide funds for teachers, food, toilets, doors, windows, and desks as well as Hayden’s Playground and Connor’s Toy Box.

Scott’s Legacy returned in June 2023 to complete construction and see the needs Kundael described to us firsthand. We met with the elders and children, delivered clothing, toys, funds for food, and shoes and school supplies donated by St. Paul’s Lutheran School in Kingsville, MD.

Most importantly, we returned to the US with a promise to help them with their most pressing need – clean water.

“BY MEANS OF WATER, WE GIVE LIFE TO EVERYTHING”

As you can see from the photographs, the community shares what limited water resources they have with animals. This results in illness and death – which would be fully preventable if this village had clean water. Prior attempts at drilling wells for water were not successful. In 2023, the government brought clean water to the region.  Now, if Scott’s Legacy can provide a way for this village to tap into that clean water source, it will change the lives of not only the children at the school but their families and community as well.  This is a large and expensive task but as we’ve said before – once you see a problem, looking away is not an option.

YOUR GIFT IS BEING MATCHED - DOUBLE YOUR IMPACT!

It is with great gratitude that we share that the Kevin E. Myers Family Foundation matched $15,000 in donations to provide clean water, food and other services to the people of Makao Mapya. Raising $15,000, with Kevin’s match, we reached our goal of $30,000 and be able to not only provide clean water to the over 700 Maasai people as well as build a Sara’s Kitchen to provide access to a food program complete with maize, beans, and a Wyatt’s Garden. Construction began late December 2023. We will keep you posted on our progress. Thank you!
