2022 YEAR IN REVIEW

Whether you donated, lent a hand, shared a post, or wished us well, it is because of YOU that Scott's Legacy was able to help vulnerable and orphaned children in Africa and the United States. In this issue, we offer an overview of some of the programs we were proud to support in 2022.

Without your support, we could do nothing. And certainly, we are grateful to our partners "on the ground" in Tanzania - Kundael Molla, his wife Jackie, and their daughter, Gia. We are sure that Scott is quite pleased as he looks upon our efforts from heaven; that his life held so much meaning and that such a large number of disadvantaged children are being helped.

In May/June 2023, a team of 13 volunteers will travel to Tanzania and Zambia, Africa to visit the various programs and people we assist. We will be constructing new projects, such as several playgrounds, and dedicating previous projects completed during the pandemic when we were unable to travel abroad.

Asante Sana ...

Thank you very much!

SHOES THAT GROW

Over 300 pairs of Shoes That Grow (an ingenious design!) were donated through our fundraiser. These shoes are designed to grow five sizes for a child's quickly-growing feet - and last for five years. The shoes are manufactured in Kenya, Africa, and will ship directly to our contact in Africa where they will be waiting for our team of volunteers to distribute to the kids in Tanzania and Zambia when we venture there this May.

SHADES OF HOPE ACADEMY

We continue to support the educational, living, and medical expenses of 11 of the children who live full-time at Shades of Hope Academy. We welcome James & Olivia Boddicker and their daughters, Rosie and Ruthie, who will be supporting Lawrence. We also provide funds to celebrate the children's birthdays as well as a Christmas celebration donated by the DeWalt family, who support Yvonne.

MAMA JANE'S ORPHANAGE

Our many projects at Mama Jane's Orphanage help support their great needs throughout the year. In 2022, we provided scholarship funds to the older children to pursue educational opportunities. We also provided funds for food throughout the year to stock Sara's Kitchen. The Christmas Celebration, sponsored by Susan Skiles, featured a roasted goat - a great treat for the children and staff. When we travel there in May 2023, we will dedicate Butler's Bunkhouse for Girls, honoring Mark Butler; and Poppy's Place, honoring Scott's grandfather, the late Jim Hock.

CONNOR'S TOY BOXES

Last summer we purchased two large pallets of toys from Ollie's Bargain Outlet in Maryland, and with the store's help, the toys were shipped to Tanzania, Africa to restock nine Connor's Toy Boxes at schools and orphanages. Scott's cousin, Peyton, has been busy collecting yo-yos and jump-ropes to fill the toy boxes to distribute to children through our outreach program. The older children at Mama Jane's will earn income by making 11 new toy boxes. Connor's grandmother, Susan, and cousins, Acadia & Ellis, will fill and distribute the toy boxes when they travel with our team in May.

JENN LAKE

AT FLAMBOYANT SPECIAL SCHOOL

A sustainable fish pond is under construction at Flamboyant Special School (FSS) in Mazabuka, Africa, in memory of Jennifer Powell Smith. Jenn Lake will be dedicated in June 2023 during our trip there. The pond will serve the 118 special needs children by providing them with a nutritional food source, as well as income for fish sold at market. FSS was founded by the Sisters of Mercy and is operated by the Brothers of Charity. We have provided funds for food throughout the year for Scotty's Garden, Karen's Playpark, and the school's food needs.

NASA NURSERY SCHOOL

Our amazing partner, Kundael Molla (pictured in white tee), coordinated the construction of NASA Nursery School, with Scott's Legacy providing the funds for windows and doors to complete it. We also provided 50 two-seater desks, books, and other necessary equipment. NASA is located in an extremely poor and remote region in Tanzania; prior to construction, children from this village walked seven miles (or more) to school each day! In addition to an education, the school provides the students with clean water and a place for the community to gather. We are excited to visit NASA for the first time when we travel there in May!

BEAU'S BUNDLES

When Marylanders Katie & Brian Benden (pictured left) learned that some babies in Africa were wearing rags and plastic bags as diapers, they created Beau’s Bundles to help. With this program, the Bendens continue the legacy that honors their infant son, Beau, a stillborn. In November 2022, they collected supplies in honor of what would have been his 5th birthday, to help vulnerable babies in Africa and the United States. Katie designed a splendid bag which her family, friends and co-workers filled with cloth diapers, plastic pants, socks, light blankets, and onesies. In Africa, we will distribute these bags - filled with bundles of love - to Mount Meru Hospital, Mazabuka General Hospital, and in the communities we visit. The Bendens also will continue to distribute the bags here in Maryland to vulnerable moms and babies.
